Approval of Allopathic Training Residents who have completed or are currently in an
allopathic training program may apply for and complete the certification exam
prior to obtaining 'complete and approved' status thru the American
Osteopathic Association (AOA).
However, the final score results will not be released to the candidate
nor will the candidate be recommended for certification until that training
has received ‘complete and approved status’ from the AOA. A statement of understanding must be signed
as part of the application process.
All deadlines for submission of application documents as well as
obtaining certification must be met.
The
successful completion of the examination, the review and approval of the
residency paperwork and the awarding of certification must be accomplished
within six years from the date of approval of the training program. Application materials for program approval may be obtained by contacting the Postgraduate Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association at (800) 621-1773 or www.do-online.org AOA Resolution No. 56 Resolution No. 56, passed by the AOA Board of Trustees, allows for examination eligibility for those holding ABMS primary certification in good standing. This resolution originally passed in July 2004 and has since been modified to remove the five-year post-residency requirement and to include ABMS-certified osteopathic physicians who participated in a clinical pathway to achieve ABMS certification. The AOA Certification Office must be contacted to obtain an application for eligibility and further requirements. They may be reached at (800)621-1773.
