Maintenance/CMEs

Membership in the AOA must remain current and in good standing in order for certification to continue its active status. CAQ certification requires the maintenance of primary certification in family practice. AOA membership requires the payment of dues on an annual basis and the documentation of CME hours as follows: (note that the AOBFP requires additional hours for the maintenance of certification)

AOA Membership Requirements

  • Maintain a minimum of 120 CME hours of postgraduate credits over a three (3) year period coordinated with the AOA CME cycle. At least 30 of those hours must be in category 1-A to maintain AOA membership standing. The remaining 90 hours of the CME requirement may be satisfied with either Category 1-A, 1-B, 2-A or 2-B credits. These credits must be submitted to and approved by the CME department of the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Pay an annual AOA registration and certification fee with the AOA membership fee as required by the Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association.

AOBFP Certification Requirements(in addition to above requirements)

  • Earn thirty (30) additional hours to maintain a total of 150 CME hours over a three-year period coordinated with the AOA CME cycle.
  • Fifty (50) of the required 150 hours must be in the primary specialty of family practice and OMT. Hours that do not qualify toward the 50 primary specialty credits would apply toward the overall requirement of 150 credits.
