Welcome to AOBFP.ORG The
American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) was established
in 1972 as the American Osteopathic Board of General Practitioners.
The Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association
approved the name change of the Board in July 1993.
All physicians awarded certification in general practice are
currently listed as board certified in family practice if all AOA
membership requirements have been satisfied. The
AOBFP is one of 18 certifying Boards of the American
Osteopathic Association (AOA) and is regulated by its Bureau of
Osteopathic Specialists to administer examinations resulting in
certification awarded by the American Osteopathic Association.
The examinations offered by the AOBFP include primary
certification in family practice, certification of added qualifications
(CAQ) examinations in osteopathic geriatrics in family medicine, sports
medicine, undersea and hyperbaric medicine, hospice and palliative care,
sleep medicine, with recertification in family practice and CAQ recertification in
addiction medicine, osteopathic geriatrics in family medicine and sports
medicine. The
clinical practice route to eligibility for certification in family
practice expired with the October 2001 exam administration.
Applicants now must complete an AOA-approved family
practice residency program of two years in addition to the one-year
AOA-approved internship. Voluntary Recertification in family practice began in Fall 1994 with mandatory Recertification every eight years required for certification awarded in March 1997 and thereafter. CAQ certificates in addiction medicine and sports medicine are time-dated for ten years. The CAQ certificate in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and the CAQ certificate in Geriatric Medicine is time-dated for ten years if issued after December 31, 1995.
